The Festspielhaus complex used by the "Salzburger Festspiele" summer festival consists of three theatres under one roof:

  • Felsenreitschule built 1693 according to plans by Fischer von Erlach as a riding hall for the Archbishops of Salzburg, including 36 boxes chiseled from the rocks of the Mönchsberg. Used as an open-air theatre for sport, dance and theatre performances since the 18th century. Used by the "Salzburger Festspiele" since 1926. Famous as a filming venue for the Trapp family's concert in the movie "The Sound of Music". 1970 rebuilding. 1549 seats.

  • Kleines Festspielhaus built 1924-1926 by Eduard Hütter as an alteration of the 1607 "Hofmarstall" (court horse stables). Opened 13 Aug 1927 with Hofmannsthal's "Das Große Welttheaer". 1300 seats. 1936-1938 rebuilding by Clemens Holzmeister (addition of a stage house, extension of the auditorium to 1680 seats). 1962-1963 alterations by Hans Hofmann and Erich Engels. Today 1324 seats (+ 60 standing).

  • Großes Festspielhaus built 1956-1960 by Clemens Holzmeister (inlcuding a baroque façade by Fischer von Erlach). Opened 26 July 1960 with Richard Strauss's "Der Rosenkavalier". 2177 seats.
