Country: Switzerland (Schweiz/Suisse/Svizzera/Svizera) Canton: Genève City: Genève Location: 11, boulevard du Théâtre Built 1874-1879 by Jacques-Elysée Goss (inspired by Garnier's Paris Opéra). Funded by a bequest of the Count Charles de Brunswick to the city of Genève. Opened 2 Oct 1879 with Rossini's "Guiglielmo Tell". Destroyed by a fire during a performance of Wagner's "Die Walküre" in 1951, leaving only the exterior walls and the foyer. Later renovation, extension of the stage buildings, and rebuilding of the auditorium in modern form by Charles Schopfer and Marcello Zavelani-Rossi. Re-opened 1962 with Verdi's "Don Carlos".
