Built 1818-1850 by Antonio López Aguado at the former site of the Teatro de los Caños del Peral. Opened 19 November 1850 with Donizetti's "La Favorite". Closed 1925 because of dilapidation. Various attempts at restoration from 1927. 1965-1966 rebuilding as "Sala de Conciertos" (concert hall) by Manuel González Valcárcel. Re-opened 13 October 1966. Declared National Monument in 1977. 1986-1997 re-conversion to an opera house by González Valcárcel, Francisco Rodríguez a.o. Re-opened 1997 with de Falla's ballet "El sombrero de tres picos" and de Falla's opera "La vida breve".
