Country: France Department, Region: Rhône, Rhône-Alpes City: Lyon Location: place de la Comédie Built 1831 as "Grand Théâtre" by Antoine-Marie Chenavard and Jean-Marie Pollet, on the site of a previous theatre (built 1756 by Jacques-Germain Sufflot, demolished). Opened 1 July 1831 with Boieldieu's "La Dame Blanche". Ca. 1840 rebuildings. 1985-1993 complete rebuilding by Jean Nouvel within the exterior walls, preserving only the foyer. Addition of a glass dome. Re-opened 14 May 1993. Also known as "Opéra Nouvel" in honour of the architect, Jean Nouvel. Notable world premieres:
