Opened 1791 as "Théâtre Molière", named in honour the French actor and playwright, Molière (1622-1673). During the French Revolution, renamed "Théâtre Sans-Culottes", later re-renamed. Closed 1807. Re-opened 1831. Closed 1833 and converted into a warehouse.

Restored in the 1990s. Re-opened Oct 1995 as "Théâtre Molière - Maison de la Poésie".

[Note: From 1904 to 1917, the Théâtre des Bouffes du Nord was named "Théâtre Molière.]
