Country: France Department, Region: Bas-Rhin, Alsace City: Strasbourg (Straßburg) Location: 19, place Broglie Built 1821 by Jean Villot. Opened 1821 with Grétry's "La fausse magie". Destroyed by bombs on 10 September 1870. 1872-1873 reconstructed to Villot's plans by Johann Gottfried Conrath. Re-opened 4 September 1873 with Beethoven's ouverture "Die Weihe des Hauses" and Mozart's "Le nozze di Figaro". 1888 extensions by Ott (new dressing rooms, library, costume stores). 1374 seats. Used for opera and ballet performances by the resident opera company, Opéra national du Rhin. Also used for drama performances in Alsatian dialect by Théâtre Alsacien de Strasbourg.
