Country: Germany (Deutschland) State: Sachsen-Anhalt City: Bad Lauchstädt Location: Kurpark Built 1802 by Heinrich Gentz and Martin Friedrich Rabe in co-operation with the poet and state minister, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1759-1832), for the Sachsen-Weimar court. Opened 26 June 1802 with Goethe's prelude "Was wir bringen" and Mozart's "La clemenza di Tito". Used as a summer home to the Weimar court theatre company until 1811. 1818 bought by the Kingdom of Prussia and declared Royal Dramatic Theatre. Subsequently used as a summer theatre. 1830 stabilisation works. 1834 site of Richard Wagner's debut as a conductor. 1907-1908 renovation by Th. Lehmann and G. Wolff. Re-opened 13 Jul 1908 with Goethe's "Iphigenie auf Tauris". 1966-1968 exterior and interior renovation to the original designs, reconstruction of the original stage machinery. 550 seats. Currently used for a summer season of drama and opera performances by companies from Halle and other touring companies, for a winter concert season, and for performances by the annual "Händel-Festpiele Halle" festival.
