Country: Germany (Deutschland) State: Bayern City: Coburg Location: Schlossplatz 6 Built 1837-1840 as "Herzogliches Hoftheater" by Carl Balthasar Harres and Vincenz Fischer-Birnbaum for count Ernst I. von Sachsen-Coburg-Gotha. Opened 17 Sep 1840 with Auber's "Le lac des fées". 1857 interior alterations (extension of auditorium boxes, installation of proscenium boxes). Ca. 1918 renamed "Landestheater". 1970-1977 major renovation and modernization (completely destroying the historic stage technology). Used for opera, ballet and drama performances by the resident companies. Originally ca. 1000 seats, today: 557 seats. |
