Built 1910-1911 as "Schauburg" by Wilhelm Leyn and Rudolf Goedeke as a private theatre for the "Hannoversche Schauspielhaus-Gesellschaft m.b.H." society under the direction of the actor and impresario, Franz Rolan. Interior painted decoration by Hermann Knottnerus-Meyer. Opened 15 May 1911 with Goethe's "Faust I". Originally used as a drama theatre, after a bankruptcy in 1912 mainly used for operetta and comedy performances. 1923 rented by the city of Hannover. Subsequently used for drama performances by the municipal theatre company. 1925 bought by the city of Hannover. 1926 renamed "Schauspielhaus". 990 seats. Completely destroyed by bombs in Oct 1943.
