Country: Germany (Deutschland) State: Hessen City: Kassel (Cassel) Location: Königstraße / Opernplatz Built 1765-1769 by Simon Louis du Ry as "Landgräfliches Opernhaus" for landgrave Friedrich II. von Hessen-Kassel, converting the former palace of prince Maximilian. Originally used for opera performances, since 1787 also used for drama performances. 1821 rebuilding by Bromeis for prince-elector Wilhelm II. von Hessen-Kassel. Renamed "Kurfürstliches Opernhaus", later "Königliches Opernhaus". Ca. 1200 seats. 1894 renovations. Demolished 1910. [1907-1909 a new "Königliches Hoftheater" was built at another site.] Notable world premieres:
