State: Thüringen City: Weimar Location: Theaterplatz 2 Built 1906-1907 as "Großherzogliches Hoftheater" by Max Littmann for Großherzog Wilhelm-Ernst von Sachsen-Weimar-Eisenach, at the site of the old Hoftheater (built 1825, demolished 1906). Opened 17 Feb 1907 with Goethe's "Iphigenie auf Tauris". Renamed "Landestheater" on 17 November 1918. Renamed "Deutsches Nationaltheater" on 19 January 1919. Site of the "Deutsche Nationalversammlung" from 6 February 1919 to 31 July 1919, the constituent parliament assembly for the first German republic later known as "Weimarer Republik". Interior destroyed by bombs on 9 Feb 1945. 1946-1948 rebuilding of the interior to modern plans. Re-opened 28 Aug 1948 with Goethe's "Faust I". 1973-1975 auditorium renovation and stage modernization. Re-opened 5 October 1975 with Goethe's "Faust I". 1997-1999 renovations. Re-opened 31 Jan 1999 with Goethe's "Faust I" and "Faust II".
