Built 1875-1897 by G. B. Basile (who had been elected by a jury including the German theatre architect, Gottfried Semper). Opened 16 May 1897 with Verdi's "Falstaff". Restorations from 1974. Subsequently closed for many years without an official reason. Re-opened 12 May 1997 as a concert hall, re-opened 2 Apr 1998 as an opera house. Also known as "Teatro Massimo Vittorio Emanuele". Capacity: 2228 persons.
