Ancient Roman theatre, built 13 BC on the "Campus Martius" (Campo Marzio). Named in honour of Emperor Augustus's nephew, Marcus Claudius Marcellus. Ca. 10.000 - 15.000 seats. Converted into houses in medieval times. Converted into a fortress in the 13th century by the Savelli family, and again to a palazzo in the 16th century by the Orsini family. 1926-1932 removal of several additions and lowering of the street to the ancient street level, thus making the lower floor of the ancient theatre façade visible again. Currently used as an apartment complex.
