Country: Italy (Italia) Region: Veneto City: Vicenza Designed 1580 by Andrea Palladio for the Accademia Olimpica, as the first single-standing roofed theatre of modern times. After Palladio's death in 1581, completed by his son Silla Palladio and, from 1584, Vincenzo Scamozzi to the original plans (but extended by a back stage area with characteristic street scenes). Opened 3 March 1585 with Sophocles's "Oidipous Tyrannos" with choral music by Gabrieli. Notable world premieres:
