First venue on the site opened 1800 as "Theatre Royal". 1898 rebuilding, re-opened as "New Theatre Royal". Renamed "Hippodrome Theatre". 1906 rebuilding by W. G. R. Sprague. Re-opened as "Empire Theatre of Varieties". Also used as a cinema. 1953 renamed "Eros Cinema". Closed 30 May 1959. Subsequently demolished in favour of shops.
