Built 1788 for the actor/manager Samuel Butler. Closed 1848. Subsequently used as corn chandler's and furniture store house, as wine vaults and as an auction room. Rediscovered in 1940. 1963 restored by Richard Southern and Richard Leacroft. Re-opened as a working theatre in 1963. Used for drama, music hall, poetry, comedy and youth theatre performances and for classical concerts. 2001-2003 major restoration. Originally ca. 450 seats, currently 200 seats.
