Built 1930-1932 by George Tonge, replacing the Opera House (built 1891, destroyed by fire in 1929). Opened 19 Dec 1932. Originally 1600 seats. Named in honour of the English actor, producer, dramatist, and poet, David Garrick (1717-1779). 1957 converted into a cinema. Closed 16 Nov 1963. Subsequently converted into a bingo hall.
