Built 1932 by Elisabeth Scott as "Shakespeare Memorial Theatre", incorporating the relics of the previous "Shakespeare Memorial Theatre" (built 1879, destroyed by a fire in 1926) as rehearsal and conference rooms. Named in honour of the Stratford-born English playwright, poet, and actor, William Shakespeare (ca.1564-1616). 1936-1991 continuous alterations. 1960 renamed "Royal Shakespeare Theatre". One of the homes of the "Royal Shakespeare Company". 1412 seats.

1986 conversion of the conference wing by Michael Reardon, re-opened as "Swan Theatre" (432 seats) and "Ashcroft Room". Addition of a new tower at the site of the 1879 tower.
