Named in honour of the Stratford-born English playwright, poet, and actor, William Shakespeare (ca.1564-1616). 1936-1991 continuous alterations. 1960 renamed "Royal Shakespeare Theatre". 2007-2010 major rebuilding. One of the homes of the "Royal Shakespeare Company". 1412 seats. 1986 conversion of the conference wing by Michael Reardon, re-opened as "Swan Theatre" (432 seats) and "Ashcroft Room".
