Built 1744 as "Theatre". 1765 reconstruction and extension. 1769 renamed "Theatre Royal". Several renovations and alterations in 1822, 1835, 1866, 1880 (new facade by George Styan), 1888, 1902 (new auditorium and stage), 1967 (major renovation and extension by a modern foyer by Patrick Gwynne) and 1994. Currently 847 seats.
