Built 1850-1853 as "Théatre impérial" (also known as "Théatre municipal" or "Opéra") by Frederic Chassériau. Opened 29 September 1853. Original capacity: 1534 patrons. Destroyed by fire in 1882, subsequently rebuilt by Oudot (new capacity: 2095 patrons). 1936 interior rebuilding by Taphoureau and Guermonprez. Ca. 1962 renamed "Théâtre National Algérien" (TNA). 1969 major interior rebuilding.
