Built 1881 as a circus in neobaroque style. In the late 1890s converted to a variety theatre. 1936 new seating (benches were replaced by chairs). During German occupation in World War II, interim home to the Národní Divadlo company. 1948 renamed "Divadlo Umení lidu" [Artist People's Theatre]. 1954 nationalized and renamed "Státní divadlo v Karlíne". 1961 renamed "Hudebni divadlo Karlín" [Karlín Music Theatre]. 1099 seats. Used for comedies with songs, operettas, musicals, ballets and concerts.
