Provisionally opened 11 June 1881 in presence of the Austrian crown prince with the world premiere of Bedrich Smetana's opera "Libuse". Completely destroyed by a fire on 11 August 1881. Rebuilt 1881-1883 by Josef Schulz. Re-opened 18 November 1883 with Smetana's "Libuse". 1977-1983 major renovation (with addition of a new building for technical rooms, a restaurant, and a new theatre, "Nová Scéna", by Pavel Kupka and Karel Práger). Re-opened 18 November 1983, again with Smetana's "Libuse". 1598 seats. Notable world premieres:
